Second spacewalk completed for Sophie Adenot
The spacewalk, designated US EVA-98, concluded at 20:57 CEST on 25 August, finishing work that had begun on 18 August when stuck bolts and connectors on a failed antenna delayed progress. This was Sophie Adenot's second spacewalk and the 32nd by a European astronaut.
Adenot and Menon switched their suits to battery power at 14:27 CEST and exited the Quest airlock. They first installed a foot restraint on Canadarm2, which was operated by NASA astronaut Jack Hathaway from inside the Station. Menon rode the robotic arm to External Platform 3, where the spare Space-to-Ground Antenna (SGANT) had been stored since 2009, while Adenot translated along the Station's exterior to reach the worksite independently. Menon removed the antenna's securing bolts and held it as Canadarm2 moved him to the Z1 truss; Adenot also translated to Z1, where she cleaned and lubricated the bolt inserts. After mounting the spare antenna on the boom, they secured it, completed electrical connections, removed the gimbal locks that had prevented rotation during transport, and installed a heat shield.
Next, they retrieved the failed antenna that had been temporarily secured to the truss during the previous spacewalk. After Adenot released the tie-downs, Menon took control of the antenna and rode Canadarm2 to its stowage location, with Adenot translating independently. Together they permanently secured the failed antenna, then Adenot helped Menon detach from the foot restraint. Both returned to the airlock and ingressed the Station. Adenot now has 12 hours and 53 minutes of spacewalking time over two EVAs; this was the 283rd spacewalk in support of ISS assembly, maintenance, and upgrades.
