APOD: 2026 August 11 – Six Moons of Saturn

Saturn currently leads the Solar System with 293 confirmed moons as of June 2026, well ahead of Jupiter's 115. Most are small irregular satellites just a few kilometers across or less, grouped in tilted outer orbits. This APOD features a sharp telescopic family portrait taken on August 5 showing six of Saturn's largest satellites.

At lower right is Titan, 5,150 km in diameter — larger than Earth's Moon and slightly larger than Mercury. Also visible are icy major moons Mimas, Tethys, Enceladus, Dione, and Rhea. Titan was the first known Saturnian moon, discovered by Christiaan Huygens in 1655, and later Voyager and Cassini missions greatly expanded the catalog of Saturn's moons.
