Artemis II Crew Moon Photo Annotations
A newly published image article showcases a visualization of a dark Moon eclipsing the Sun, overlaid with handwritten notes, taken from an Artemis II crew member's tablet on April 6, 2026. NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman (marked in blue) and Victor "Ike" Glover (green), along with CSA astronaut Jeremy Hansen (red), used the annotations to record the locations of impact flashes they observed.
Overall, the crew reported seeing five extremely faint "pinprick" bursts of light from their vantage point aboard the Orion spacecraft, which was 46,000 miles away from the Moon at the time. These flashes are sparked when rocky fragments strike the lunar surface.
From April 1 through April 10, 2026, the Artemis II crew traveled to the Moon and back, capturing imagery and scientific observations of the Moon along the way. The full lunar science dataset from that journey is now available to the global science community and the public for further study, alongside a report on the findings and the crew's audio observations.
