A total solar eclipse is coming to Europe

A total solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes directly between Earth and the Sun, casting a shadow on Earth's surface. For people in the darkest part of the shadow, the Sun's face is completely blocked, revealing its faint outer atmosphere.

On Wednesday 12 August, this shadow will cross Greenland, Iceland, northeastern Portugal, and Spain. Because this will be the first total eclipse visible from mainland Spain since 1905, ESA is organizing special activities. The agency will broadcast live from the Observatorio Astrofísico de Javalambre, allowing anyone worldwide to watch. Additionally, ESA is partnering with the City and University of León to offer a free in-person event featuring interactive workshops, talks, and live observations.
